Improvements, upgrades and changes to the A22, from Foxley Hill Road in Purley to Old Barn Lane in Kenley, are scheduled to start from February and be completed by the end of March 2021. These works result from consultations carried out in 2017.
The roadworks included changes to double and single red lines and red route clearway controls; bus stop facilities; road layouts at some side roads and parking areas; and improvements to zebra crossings.
The purpose of the changes is to improve road safety. This is to be achieved by increasing visibility at selected junctions; restricted parking use, moving parking bays and preventing illegal parking; relocating road furniture, including bus stops; changing kerb heights and pavement layouts; repainting road markings and making zebra crossings more visible.
Some examples:
Parking outside Kenley Memorial Hall will be extended to create 5 more parking bays. This will become a continuous parking bay with a two-hour parking limit throughout, applicable Monday to Saturday, 7am to 7pm, with no return for four hours. Parking remains unrestricted on Sundays. The aim presumably to move parked vehicles away from the Station Road exit.
St James’s shops – 32-40 Godstone Road: move the bus stop and create 4 more parking bays
Zebra Crossings – widening and improved visibility of the four zebra crossings along the A22.
Pavement resurfacing at St James’s shops and on Kenley Parade and changes to kerbs and layouts.

No Pedestrian Crossing A22 Kenley Parade – Unfortunately there is still no provision (as far as can be seen) for a safe crossing point and/or speed restrictions by Kenley Parade, despite protests and past incidents. Let’s hope the changes will make crossing the Godstone Road here less hazardous.
Most residents will have witnessed excessive speeds and overtaking along the ‘Water works’ section, without any traffic calming measures this is likely continue despite these changes.
