This year will be the 78th anniversary of ‘The Hardest Day’ during ‘The Battle of Britain’ in which RAF Kenley played a major part. In connection with this special year the BBMF will be making a flypast over the airfield on 19th August (expected around 1pm), weather permitting. The actual timing is not confirmed but look out for updates nearer the time.
For the second year in succession, we commemorate a special occasion. You may remember last year was the centenary of our historic and famous airfield. This year it is the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force formed from the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service on 1st April 1918.
It is also of interest to note that it will be 18 years to the day since the ‘RAF Kenley Tribute’ was unveiled by Air Chief Marshal Sir Anthony Bagnall and I am sure many people reading this article will have great memories of that beautiful Summer’s day. Residents who have not seen the Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire close-up are in for a real treat. For safety reasons, please keep to the ‘RAF Kenley Tribute’ side of Kenley Common.
