Campaign for a Democratically Elected Mayor of Croydon
The petition to compel Croydon Council to hold a referendum for an elected mayor was handed to Croydon Council on 3rd September. However, a lawyer for Croydon Council has written to the DEMOC chair informing him that the Council refuse to recognise a valid petition has been submitted at this time, citing Covid legislation to support their claim. If this position prevails there will not be a referendum in May 2021 – to coincide with local elections. Over 20,000 Croydon residents signed the petition. The DEMOC committee are considering their next steps.
