As work continues to rejuvenate Wattendon Pond, we have come to the realisation that as a pond, it has failed. Either through mishap or design, the pond won’t hold water. The thick pond liner and ‘self-healing’ clay layer used in its construction cannot be repaired sufficiently. Even if it didn’t leak, the amount of rainwater needed to fill it would be enormous. There is no other source of water nearby, so there’s no way of topping up levels in times of drought. Because of this it has been decided to change the pond area into a small sanctuary for both residents and wildlife.
It’s our aim to plant native and drought resistant plants that will attract beneficial insects and birds. This will not only provide food and shelter for wildlife, but a pleasing display of flowers and shrubs for residents to enjoy. We have already added to the seating with an additional picnic bench and repaired the oak bench seat. Future plans include a display board that will show the various types of plants, insects and birds that visitors can expect to see.
In the absence of a pond at Wattendon Pond, a name change is needed. Perhaps Wattendon Corner or Wattendon Hollow?
